What is Lightning Network?

Lightning Network is a peer-to-peer layer 2 network built on top of Bitcoin network. Due to high transaction fees and slow processing times, Bitcoin has not seen widespread use. However, Lightning Network aims to tackle these shortcomings and bring Bitcoin payments into our everyday lives.

What are the benefits?

Lightning Network boosts many advantages from Bitcoin.

  • Speed – high network throughput of 25 million transactions per second allows almost instant Bitcoin transfers
  • Low fees – transaction fees are almost non-existent on Lightning Network compared to existing fees on Bitcoin main network
  • Privacy – details of individual transactions apart from the funding and settlement transactions are not recorded on public blockchain
